Unplugging from the News: Finding Mental Clarity by Stepping Away

During a family Army tour in Korea, we unexpectedly found ourselves without access to television. With no screen to distract us, we focused entirely on each other, and I noticed a significant improvement in my mood and sleep. Like many, I tend to leave the TV on today, even while working at home. I usually choose practical channels like financial news or something humorous for background noise. However, this constant stream of noise seems to gradually drain my energy throughout the day. Watching any news channel, in particular, can be especially exhausting. Just turning the volume down seems to help also.

I find it difficult to escape the news as many people my age seem to get caught up in the whirlwind of the latest drama, which only adds to their stress. I recall a visit to Fingerville, South Carolina, where I went for some biscuits and gravy. There, a group of older, grumpy men were engrossed in the news, complaining as if it was their daily ritual. When they asked my opinion on the latest headlines, I told them I don’t watch the news. They were strangers to me and accused me of being "some damn politician," which I found amusing. It was clear the news was a significant part of their day, and it seemed to contribute to their sour mood.

The truth is, the news can be overwhelming. If you're already dealing with personal challenges, a constant stream of negative news is like pouring salt into an open wound. Why subject yourself to that? Disconnecting from the relentless news cycle can be a powerful step towards better mental health.
