How I Did It Alone
In 2013, nearing my retirement from the Army in 2014, I found myself in a predicament: I needed to navigate the Veterans Administration (VA) disability process without any help. Despite being a persistent character, I dreaded the thought of dealing with the complexities of the VA. I repeatedly asked for assistance, but there was none to be found, primarily since I was stationed in Germany.
Faced with no other option, I took it upon myself to learn the system. Over the course of eight months, I dedicated my weekends and some duty hours to understanding the VA disability process. I immersed myself in reading regulations, gathering a substantial amount of medical documentation, and meticulously interpreting the rules.
This self-guided journey, though challenging, was incredibly educational. I never anticipated that it would lead to the creation of my book, Out of the Uniform, Back into Civilian Life: No-Nonsense Veterans Benefits Guide. Through this experience, I discovered the vast array of benefits available and how to access them effectively.
Ultimately, my efforts paid off, but it was a daunting task that I wouldn't wish on anyone. My advice for fellow veterans is to seek out a veteran service officer (VSO) to assist with the VA disability process. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one in Germany, and the U.S.-based VSO I contacted stated it was outside their jurisdiction. Having a VSO could save you from the steep learning curve I faced and streamline your path to securing the benefits you deserve.
